Elden Ring Beginner's Guide: 9 Early Game Tips
The Lands Between can be daunting for new players, so here is our beginner’s guide for From Software’s Elden Ring, including the best starting gift to take, how to respec your character, where to get a torch, and more.
So, you’ve purchased or are about to purchase Elden Ring. Good choice. In our Elden Ring review in progress, we awarded the game a rare 10/10. But From Software games are notorious for being obtuse, which is part of the charm. So, you’re wondering: Hey, is there anything I should know going into Elden Ring? Well lowly Tarnished, yes, indeed there is. And we’re here to help.
In this Elden Ring beginner’s guide video, we offer our nine best tips to make your way through the Lands Between at the start of the game. From the very outset, we let you know which starting gift is best, and where you should look to get Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears to upgrade your Flasks of Tears. A torch is a necessary item in Elden Ring but can be hard to track down, so we also tell you where to grab one early on, as well as how to use Spirit Ashes and duplicate boss souls. There are other tips in there too, so it’s very useful if you’re playing Elden Ring for the first time.
We have a separate video to help you choose which Elden Ring class is right for you, as well as more guide content, so make sure you subscribe to GameSpot on YouTube and check out the written versions on gamespot.com. In our Elden Ring review in progress, Tamoor Hussain awarded the game 10/10, calling it “a masterpiece of open-world design that places exploration and player agency at the heart of the experience.”

Thanks for the tips and explaining it for new people to the genre without talking down to them. Also, any video with Monty Python automatically is legendary
Thank you for not spoiling anything I just got the game
Hey homie, stick to the tutorial and cool it with the comedy. Not working.
Wait you get a gift you can choose? When? How?…I'm just gonna have to start all over again am I?…
Get the lantern asap. Let's you illuminate dark ares and have both hands free
Since when have “guides” become worried about spoilers? Sorry, but this seems a little much…
Yeah, yeah, everyone loves the Golden Seed. But I prefer the Lands Between rune and here's why. First off, don't use it until you unlock Melina and can level up. As a rune stone, it is protected from death. In fact, don't use any of the rune stones until you are ready to level up. This protects them from mistakes and accidental death. Nothing is worse than having to go back into a danger zone to grab your runes. When you can level up, use the rune stone by equipping it and activating. Now you have an extra 3000 runes to jump start your build. That's like killing all the soldiers at the gatehouse ruins (including the captain with his big spear). Considering there is a Golden Seed just past Storm Gate, the runes are more helpful, IMO.
Also a tip I've seen alot of experienced souls players even don't know is the chests that are trapped to teleport you can be dodged. Soon as you open one roll back and it won't get you. And if you later want to see where it takes you then just rest at grace and go back.
Thanks!
…Unfortunately, I still dont know how to level up or even change my equipment
There's also a 🏮 lantern you can wear around your hip so you won't have to carry the torch in the other hand
Never using major healing items in rpgs speaks to me ….. what if I need it later
Not much of a guide if you don't give us to it straight.
Narrator takes way to long to get to the point.
This is my first dark souls game and I do not understand how to progress, I explored, killed everything close to spawn except the horse guy, and they don't really drop anything that useful
this is my first soulsbourne, i have 15 hours so far cuz i got it 2 days ago but it has been nothing but fun. I keep dying but i keep coming back and as i overcome the enemies, the reward is totally worth it.
So glad I took the day off so I can play this game. I didn’t even bother to tell my gf, so she won’t bother me with stuff to do while I’m off
“I never use any major healing items because im scared I’m going to run out” spoke to my soul
I activated one of those mausoleums in the raya lucaria area of the game, but the headless corpse didn't let me duplicate godricks boss soul. Like, I have it in my inventory, but it didn't show up as an option I could choose. Anyone know why? Full context, the wandering mausoleum was one without a bell, if that matters.
I started as a wretch with no talisman. I spent 3 hours playing without equipment and unequipped my club. After 3 hours of learning the game mechanics and punching my way through to the first boss I eventually equipped a weapon which made the game all of a sudden go from nightmare mode to easy mode. Great game! Great video! Thank you!
Dave you’re my Elden Ring hero, thank you 😊👍
You can’t level up by visiting any 3 sites of Grace. She only appears in Limgrave. I got warped to the NE section and explored extensively, resting at multiple sites of Grace. It wasn’t until I returned to Limgrave and rested there that she appeared.
This was a really good video, thanks. One suggestion: I almost turned off when you were reading the list of all the starting items (thinking the video would be a bunch of filler)–no need to do that next time if they're on the screen and you're going through them anyway 🙂
Are u guys test this on 4k? It seems textures is much detailed and beautiful but in 1080 resolution, it looks bland and rough.
I am so bad at this game
Thanks for the tips. I too am a person that never uses major healing items in RPGS for fear of running out. Even though in my 30+ years of gaming, I never have. 😀
Really good tips, Dave!
Dont agree with trhe golden seed pick.
Spirit ashes are cheats 😤 I’m going to solo all the bosses so far so good. If I can’t learn their move set just means I need to really learn it
You can actually get spirit tuning pretty early just skip ove to carlid or lakes of liurnia and do a few lost graces (just run past everything on torrent) and she should just appear at the roundtable before you even defeated Margit
Happy to see you here DaveCtrl!
I found like 6 sites of grace before I got my doggo
Lol but seriously for 7. Just go at night not a spoiler smh
Good video, but too many spoilers for me… I’m 10 hours into the game so I thought that I would be fine, but not lol.
I got my first quest by Melina at the Church of Elia at the begining of the game giving me the ring to summon a horse – she also gave me my first quest but I can't remember what she said ? But I can't seem to find the Quest to be done in the menu – how do I know what quests are available !?
