5 Incredibly Fun GAMES to Teach Self-Regulation (Self-Control) | Social Emotional Learning

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-regulation, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. People with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially.

Teaching kids to have self-regulation is one of the most important character traits we can teach. Experts believe that kids who master self-regulation become masters of their learning, are more critical thinkers, and make healthier choices; and the benefits are life-long.

As parents, I am sure we have observed that little kids have very minimal self-regulation and older kids have some! We adults have developed this self-regulation over time. While it is something that develops as we mature, should we leave the ability to self-regulate up to nature alone, or is there something we could do at home to help kids develop or strengthen this important skill? Some exciting research says self-regulation is something kids can learn. And the best part? It can be taught through play.

Note: I’ve interchangeable used the terms self-regulation and self-control only for the sake of understanding. As Dr. Stuart Shanker says, “There is a profound difference between self-regulation and self-control. Self-control is about inhibiting strong impulses; self-regulation, reducing the frequency and intensity of strong impulses by managing stress-load and recovery. In fact, self-regulation is what makes self-control possible, or, in many cases, unnecessary. The reason lies deep inside the brain.”

  • Hi, great video and very useful. The only criticism (and apologies for this) is the background music, the click is out of time and ironically caused me some anxiety. I would recommend changing the track or omitting the click…. Please, I beg you. Hehe thanks

  • awesome!!!! very thoroughly explained.

  • Great ideas! These will help with my children. However, that high pitched transition music is hurtful to the ears. Is there a way to change it to something more pleasant?

But in Squid Game, if "it" catches a player moving, that player gets shot.

  • Hello! do you have links to the studies referenced at the end of the video?

  • The music is really creeping me out and I wish u had voiced over instead of just showing words but still going to keep watching

    omg squid game refrence!!!111!!!!😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
    ⭕🔺️🟥

  • Squid gameee 😅Red light green light

  • Red light Green Light, Squid Game just came into my mind XD

  • Red Light, Green Light also teaches children how to handle disappointment when they get sent back to start. Going to see a few temper tantrums (perhaps) before they realize that life's little set backs are no big deal usually.

  • Would this help with adhd and neuro atypical kids?

  • what application/program did you use for this video?

  • I like your excellent content most

  • Excellent sharing ❤️❤️❤️

  • Your channel is really awsome. May Allah bless yoy❤️❣️❤️❣️💜💙💚💛

  • We used to play a lot of these games when we were kids, even in school. That’s why many of us with ADHD didn’t get diagnosed until mid adulthood. We learned how to self regulate thrift games. Kids nowadays don’t have these things since they’re so addicted to electronics and especially now with the plandemic they can’t even get close to each other

  • This is perfect! This reminds me of a wonderful personalized book i bought for one of of my children, the name is “How are you today?” From LionStory. The book explores the different new emotions w child might go through and help them handle them. It was created in collaboration with a child psychologist because raising emotionally intelligent children is one of the best things you can do as a parent. ❤️

  • Thank you for the good ideas you initiated..i will definitely try most of these.

  • Disappointed this is not a video I can multitask with…. I will have to come back and rewatch. Please talk through your videos ….it helps busy working parents. Can't unload a reload the dishwasher to this

  • I think so

  • I love this! Such great info.

  • Oh my I was extremely discouraged today and this video has given me a lot of hope! My LO is 4 and is struggling at school with self regulation. I will definitely be trying these games. Thanks for creating an awesome video

  • OH these are amazing ideas! Thank you!

  • Is it possible to email me the PowerPoint/hard copy for this video? This video is so helpful for me.

  • Self-control is not just a matter of holding back from doing wrong; it includes doing what is necessary, even when this is not particularly exciting or fun. It is important for your child to learn how to establish priorities and stick to them. Have your child do the important things first. For example, he should put homework before recreation
